Native lore – the influence of animals

The native people, who have lived in BC for thousands of years, valued the creatures around them and gave each one a specific meaning in their stories.

The heron was the spirit of patience and elegance (I don’t know that I agree with the elegant part, but they certainly are a patient bird.)

The frog was the spirit of friendship and good luck.

The wolf was the spirit of family and faithfulness

The raven was the spirit of intelligence and wisdom

The otter was the spirit of playfulness and humour

The bear was the spirit of courage and strength

The eagle was the spirit of power

When you read the myths of the native people who have observed these creatures for so long, feel for the understanding of other life forms that inhabit the story. The underlying beliefs and wisdom have much to teach us.
